DelleFave commits to Rutgers
Wednesday, 20 August 2008

Vinnie DelleFave wants to be in on something big.

That's why the returning NJSIAA wrestling champion from Toms River High School East gave an oral commitment Wednesday to attend Rutgers University and Scarlet Knights' second-year head coach Scott Goodale's growing program.

DelleFave, who will be a senior this year, is the sixth wrestler to have won an NJSIAA state championship in the last two seasons to commit to Rutgers.

Jackson Memorial's three-time state champion Scott Winston, who went 137-0 during his career; Ocean Township's two-time state champion Nick Menditto; Howell's Joey Langel and Brearley's Jesse Boyden who both won state titles last season; and DePaul's Trevor Melde, who won a state title two seasons ago, will all be freshmen at Rutgers this year.

DelleFave, who won the NJSIAA 119-pound championship last March and is a three-time NJSIAA top three finisher, has known the former Jackson Memorial head coach for several years. He said he and Goodale worked together for a few summers on Long Beach Island.

"I think he's a great coach," DelleFave said. "He's trying to build a national team, and I want to be part of it."

DelleFave, who was 43-0 last season and is 107-6 for his career, said he chose Rutgers over Penn State, Rider, Columbia and Maryland.

"I felt comfortable with the coaches," DelleFave said. "I feel I can win an NCAA title there. I want to be close enough so my parents can watch me wrestle."

DelleFave said he will wrestle at 133 at Rutgers. He will wrestle at either 125 or 130 this year as he attempts to become Toms River East's first two-time state champion.

UPDATE ALERT: Shore Thing W.C. Out???

Just been told that Shore Thing will not be at the 1000 Island duals. Can someone in the know confirm this? We are still looking for other people to step up for the live updates.

Del Val is covered we still need someone from Phillipsburg and Bound Brook.

NJwrestle.com Headlines:

Fall is just around the corner and there has been some amazing headlines going on with NJ wrestlers.  They've shown the country how competitive we are throughout various national tournaments and have made us very proud.

There have been a few new hires in the coaching ranks and some top programs will make (or break) their seasons.

A few teams I've called out in the off-season have made me look bad for the most part.

Facebook is taking over the world, and yes we have a facebook page!

August brings two big team tournaments for all you junkies who can't get enough in the off-season. The first weekend in August brings the Thousand Island Duals, and later in the month right in our own backyard we have the Jersey Shore Duals.

We will attempt to post results from the Thousand Island Duals to our Live Results page.  This will be a continuation of our Beta test from our Championship coverage in AC in 2007.

A parent (name withheld) from Shore Thing has agreed to provide us with team score results.  I'm looking for a Phillipsburg, Del Val and Bound Brook parent or coach that will have email (or very good texting skills) access to provide their results to our "super secret" email address for live updates.

Shoot us an email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) if you're interested in being a helpful to the NJ wrestling community. We plan on the same protocol or better for the Jersey Shore Duals.

Camden Catholic has a new coach in Jerry Boland and Kingsway hired former Schalick coach Brian Farnham. If there are any others let us know.

NJWrestle.com is now on Facebook, Myspace and Flowrestling. Add us as friends and keep checking our profiles for special announcements.

I called out Phillipsburg on their lack of off-season activity and then I saw they took on High Point in the Hopatcong Duals and they're also heading to the Thousand Island Duals.  Also, rumor has it they are considering the Jersey Shore Duals (this isn't confirmed on our end).  Time will tell with my prognostication on who wins here.

New Jersey wrestling over the last few years has been proving that we are one of the elite states when it comes to the sport.  The cadet freestyle entrants from NJ went to Fargo as contenders and made all of NJ wrestling proud by dominating the nation and finishing first. Team NJ averaged over two points per wrestlers which was more than double the second place state (PA).

Overall, NJ had seven champions and 24 All Americans combined from Greco and Freestyle in the two different age divisions (Cadet and Junior).  Full results with a nice breakdown of point per wrestlers can be found on the NJ USA Wrestling page.  Great job by all that represented New Jersey at this prestigious event.

NJWrestle.com has some new technology that we plan to implement by the end of the summer. This will allow us to offer new content that will truly make us a one stop shop for NJ wrestling.  We will offer a history section, live results, videos and more.  All this content will be from all over the internet but this experiment will allow you see all of it without leaving our site.  Of course these additions will be free, but certain parts my require you to sign up for an account at no cost.

Enjoy the rest of your summer...
