Wrestler of the Year – 23-24 Season

It was a tough couple weeks at NJWrestle.com Headquarters after the state tournament. We have been comparing, arguing, watching video and comparing some more to finally be able to come to a decision on a New Jersey Wrestler of the Year. There are so many deserving candidates it made the decision tough. In the end we kept coming back to the freshman from Rumson-Fair Haven, Sonny Amato.

Sonny started his freshman season as a middle weight at one of the toughest tournaments in the country, The Beast of the East, where he took 4th place beating national ranked Maddox Shaw and losing to Chase Van Horn, Brooke Point (Virginia) in the semifinals and then Blair Academy’s Logan Rozynski 2-0 to place 4th. Little over a week later he lost to Rozynski again in the Sam Cali finals 8-7. He never lost another match the rest of the season.

His freshman journey included winning a Shore Conference Tournament title beating multi-time state placer Zach Reilley, He won a Region 5 championship beating Reilley again in the finals and then ripped off 5 wins, including two against national ranked wrestlers, to win his first state title.

For being named New Jersey Wrestler of the Year for the 23-24 season Sonny will be receiving a freshly designed t-shirt for his accomplishment. Have your parent/guardian or coach reach out to us so we can ship your shirt.

Below we embedded a great video breaking down how Sonny beat Alex Nini in the finals. The video was done by Spark Wrestling.
